A Great Research Paper Sample Using MLA Writing Format – Useful At All?

If you are writing a research paper connected with the humanities, it is likely that you would be using the MLA style. This style concentrates on the rules of proper citation and referencing of the sources used during the process of preparing the research paper. The proper use of MLA style can also help the author of the paper to avoid accusations of plagiarism.

The general requirements of the MLA style are as follows:

  • - The research must be printed on the white paper of the standard size (8,5x11 inches);
  • - The text of the paper should have double spaces and be legible (the recommended font is Times New Roman). The size of the font should be 12 points;
  • - All full stops and other punctuation marks must be followed by a single space;
  • - The index of margins is 1 inch from all the sides;
  • - Anew paragraph must have an indent of 1,5 inch from the left margin;
  • - The pagination must be done in the following format: your last name plus the number of the page (for example, Johnson 1). Everything must be located in the upper right corner of the page;
  • - Italics should be used only to differentiate an example from the other text;
  • - Under the requirements of the MLA style, your research paper must have no title. The only necessary information is your name, your supervisor’s name, the title of your course and the date (everything must be written in the upper left corner of the first page).

Apart from the above mentioned requirements, there are also special ways of citation of the used sources. First of all, the general requirement is that all references must correspond to the information, provided in “Works Cited” section. The principle of citation is as follows:

The last name of the author, together with the number of the page from which a quotation was taken or paraphrased, must be written in the text of the research paper. There exist 2 possible ways of fulfilling this requirement:

  1. 1) In Joyce’s works we may find his devotion to formalism and the lack of solidarity to workers (Watts 11);
  2. 2) According to Watts, Joyce’s works are characterized by a devotion to formalism and the lack of solidarity to workers (11);

Considering these two examples, we may assume that the information in the sentence can be found on the eleventh page of a work by an author named Watts. In case the reader wants to know more about it, he or she just has to open the “Works Cited” section and get acquainted with the bibliographical data.
