Who Can Help Me Find a Good Topic for Research Paper at High School?

One of the secrets to writing well is writing on a topic you are genuinely interested in, as well as one that captivates the audience and makes them view things differently. This can be a little tough for high school students writing research papers in high school because they believe that all topics worth writing about have already been taken. This couldn’t be further from the truth. There are endless possibilities of good topics for research papers. It just takes some creative thinking and diligent searching to find them.

Here’s how you can get some help to find a good research paper topic in high school:

  • Ask your Instructor: Don’t shy away from the opportunity of asking your instructor for some ideas. He or she might have a ready-made list of some topics that would make for great research papers. But more often than not your instructor will ask you a few things about class that have interested you and help you develop a research topic from these. Seeking the guidance of your professor will also give you the opportunity to learn more about what he or she expects from your paper. This will save you a lot of time through the research portion of the process.

  • Check with your librarian: Your high school librarian may not be an expert in your research subject, but he or she is certainly an expert on where to find information about your subject, develop sub-topics, and how to use bibliographies to inspire more ideas. Your high librarian can also save you a lot of time by showing you where to find some of your materials if you are unfamiliar with conducting physical research in your school’s library (many students are!). You might be best off starting your research in the library early in case other students are doing research on the same topic. The last thing you want is to select a topic only to find that all of your resources have already been checked out.

  • Check the course syllabus: When looking for a good research topic, don’t think that you have to stick to just the subjects you have already covered in class. There may be plenty of great topics yet to be studied, and you might catch wind of them by checking out your course syllabus. Of course, you can’t wait until these topic are finally covered, you should get ahead of your readings and start as soon as you find out about the assignment.
